Using Software Center

Overview:

Software Center is a user-friendly tool that allows you to install and manage applications, updates, and other settings on your Borough workstation. This guide describes the various sections of Software Center and provides instructions on how to use its features.

Instructions:

Accessing Software Center

To open Software Center, you can:

  • Search for "Software Center" in the Windows search bar, or
  • Go to Start menu > Microsoft System Center > Software Center.

Software Center is organized into six main sections: Applications, Updates, Operating Systems, Installation Status, Device Compliance, and Options. Here's what you need to know about each section.

Applications

The Applications section allows you to install or uninstall applications that are approved for Borough use. In some cases, software licensing requires approval before installation. Follow these steps to install applications:

  1. Select the Application

    • Choose the application from the list of available applications and click "Install."
  2. Request Approval (if needed)

    • If the application requires approval, select it and enter your use case in the text box. An email will be sent to the administrator for approval. Once approved, the application will automatically install.
  3. Uninstalling Applications

    • Some applications may have an "Uninstall" option. If it's greyed out, uninstalling is not permitted.

Updates

The Updates section shows any updates that are available for your system. Note that most updates deployed by IT are required and won't be visible in this section.

Operating Systems

This section allows you to upgrade operating system versions if needed. It's typically not used often in the Borough's environment.

Installation Status

The Installation Status section displays the current status of application installations. This is useful if multiple applications are being installed simultaneously.

Device Compliance

This section checks your machine to ensure it's running correctly and within IT parameters. It helps maintain compliance with security and operational standards.

Options

The Options section allows you to customize business hours, enabling better control over updates and management. It also contains settings related to power management, computer maintenance, and remote control, but these are generally not configurable by users.
