Using the VPN

Overview:

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is a secure network connection that allows users to communicate over another network, such as the internet, with privacy and security. At the Borough, VPN enables laptop users to access the MSB network from remote locations, like a hotel or a home office. This guide explains how to use VPN and provides important tips for ensuring your connection is secure and up-to-date.

Instructions:

Connecting to VPN

To connect to the Borough's VPN, follow these steps:

  1. Log Into Your Computer

    • Start your laptop or desktop and log into your Windows account.
  2. Open GlobalProtect

    • Click the Windows Start Menu and type "GlobalProtect" in the search bar. Click on the GlobalProtect application to open it.
    • The GlobalProtect window will appear in the lower right corner of your screen.
  3. Designate the Portal

    • The portal should be automatically set for you. If not, enter msbvpn.matsugov.us into the portal field and click "Connect."
  4. Authenticate with MFA

    • You will be prompted to enter your Borough email address (@matsugov.us) and your password.
    • You will then be prompted for multi-factor authentication (MFA) through Microsoft Azure. Make sure you have the Microsoft Authenticator app installed and set up on your mobile device to complete the MFA process.
  5. Check VPN Connection

    • Once connected, the GlobalProtect icon should show a green "Connected" status, indicating that you're successfully connected to the VPN.
  6. Access Borough Resources

    • After establishing a VPN connection, you should have access to the same internal Borough resources as you do when physically at a Borough facility.

Additional Considerations

  • Remote Desktop Instructions

    • If you're required to use Remote Desktop, follow the instructions provided by your IT support team.
  • Borough Computer Updates

    • If you're working remotely on a Borough computer, ensure that your computer is online and connected to VPN on Wednesday nights. This allows the computer to receive necessary updates, which occur weekly on Wednesday evenings.

If you encounter issues with VPN connectivity or have trouble with MFA, contact your IT support team for assistance. Following these steps should help you connect to the Borough's VPN and work securely from remote locations.
