Before you act, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the employee aware of the policy or expected behavior?
  • Have I objectively gathered all the facts?
  • Am I responding quickly, consistently, and reasonably?
  • Do prior performance evaluations substantiate the employee’s ongoing deficiencies?
  • Has progressive discipline been applied? Why?  Why not?
  • For more serious discipline, such as demotion and dismissal, it is important to identify if the case has been well documented, and if just cause has been determined?
  • Is the discipline reasonably related to the offense?
